WPC Smart Messages for WooCommerce Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability

Vulnerability

A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the WPC Smart Messages for WooCommerce plugin for WordPress. This issue affects all versions through 4.2.8 and allows authenticated attackers with contributor-level access and above to inject arbitrary web scripts. The vulnerability arises from inadequate input sanitization and output escaping on user-supplied attributes, particularly the 'text' attribute of the 'wpcsm_text_rotator' shortcode. Injected scripts are executed when a user accesses the affected page.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the page.

Reproduction

To reproduce this vulnerability, an authenticated user with contributor-level access or higher can use the 'wpcsm_text_rotator' shortcode and include a 'text' attribute with injected script content. Once the shortcode is processed, the injected script will execute when the page is viewed.

Remediation

Users are advised to update the WPC Smart Messages for WooCommerce plugin to version 4.2.9 or later.
