wpDataTables WordPress Plugin Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability

Vulnerability

A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the wpDataTables WordPress plugin, specifically in versions through 6.5.0.4. The issue arises from inadequate input sanitization and output escaping in the 'prepareCellOutput()' method of the LinkWDTColumn, ImageWDTColumn, and EmailWDTColumn classes. This vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages, which will execute when a user accesses the affected page. Exploitation requires tricking an Administrator into importing data from an attacker-controlled source, with the vulnerable column types (Link, Image, or Email) activated.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the page.

Remediation

Users are advised to update the wpDataTables WordPress plugin to version 6.5.0.5 or a newer patched version.
