OSM OpenStreetMap WordPress Plugin Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability

Vulnerability

A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the OSM - OpenStreetMap plugin for WordPress, affecting all versions through 6.1.15. The vulnerability arises from inadequate input sanitization and output escaping, allowing authenticated attackers with Contributor-level access or higher to inject arbitrary scripts into pages. These scripts are executed when users access the affected pages. The vulnerability is linked to the 'marker_name' and 'file_color_list' attributes of the '[osm_map_v3]' shortcode.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the page.

Reproduction

To reproduce this vulnerability, an authenticated user with Contributor-level access or higher can use the '[osm_map_v3]' shortcode and include a 'marker_name' attribute with a value that contains the injected script. The 'file_color_list' attribute can also be used to facilitate the injection. Once the shortcode is saved, the injected script will execute when the page is viewed.

Remediation

Users are advised to update the OSM OpenStreetMap WordPress plugin to version 6.1.16 or a newer patched version.
