Switch CTA Box Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability

Vulnerability

A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the Switch CTA Box plugin for WordPress, affecting all versions through 1.1. The issue arises from inadequate input sanitization and output escaping of user-supplied post meta values, including 'cta_box_button_link', 'cta_box_button_id', 'cta_box_button_text', and 'cta_box_description'. The 'wppw_cta_box' shortcode retrieves these post meta values based on a user-specified post ID and directly outputs them into HTML without proper escaping. This vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher to inject arbitrary scripts into pages, which are executed when users view the affected page.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the page.

Reproduction

To reproduce this vulnerability, an authenticated user with contributor-level access or higher can use the 'wppw_cta_box' shortcode. The shortcode must be configured to reference a post that includes the vulnerable meta values. Once the shortcode is applied, any scripts injected into the meta fields will be executed when the post is viewed.
