fyyd Podcast Shortcodes WordPress Plugin Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability

Vulnerability

A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the fyyd podcast shortcodes plugin for WordPress, affecting all versions through 0.3.1. The vulnerability arises from inadequate input sanitization and output escaping of user-supplied shortcode attributes, including 'color', 'podcast_id', and 'podcast_slug'. These attributes are directly inserted into inline JavaScript within single-quoted string arguments without proper escaping or sanitization. This flaw allows authenticated attackers with Contributor-level access and above to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages, which are executed when users access the affected pages.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the page.

Reproduction

To reproduce this vulnerability, an authenticated user with Contributor-level access or higher can use the 'fyyd-podcast', 'fyyd-episode', or 'fyyd' shortcodes. By including a crafted 'color' attribute that contains malicious JavaScript, the script will be executed when the page is viewed.

Remediation

No known patch is available. Users are advised to uninstall the affected plugin and find a replacement.
