ITERAS WordPress Plugin Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability
Vulnerability
A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the ITERAS plugin for WordPress, affecting all versions up to and including 1.8.2. The issue arises from inadequate input sanitization and output escaping in the 'combine_attributes()' function, which concatenates shortcode attribute values into JavaScript code within <script> tags. This allows authenticated users with Contributor-level access and above to inject arbitrary JavaScript that executes when a user accesses the affected page.
Impact
Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the page.
Reproduction
To reproduce this vulnerability, an authenticated user with Contributor-level access or higher can use one of the vulnerable shortcodes ('iteras-ordering', 'iteras-signup', 'iteras-paywall-login', or 'iteras-selfservice') and include a double-quote character in the shortcode attribute value. This will break out of the JavaScript string context and inject arbitrary JavaScript, which will be executed when the page is accessed.
Remediation
Users can update the ITERAS WordPress plugin to version 1.8.3 or later, where this vulnerability has been fixed.
