Slider Bootstrap Carousel Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability
Vulnerability
A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the Slider Bootstrap Carousel plugin for WordPress, affecting all versions through 1.0.7. The issue arises from inadequate input sanitization and output escaping of user-supplied shortcode attributes, specifically 'category' and 'template'. Authenticated attackers with Contributor-level access and above can exploit this vulnerability to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages, which are executed when users access the injected pages.
Impact
Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the page.
Reproduction
To reproduce this vulnerability, an authenticated user with Contributor-level access or higher can add a shortcode for the Slider Bootstrap Carousel plugin, including the 'category' and 'template' attributes. The plugin will process these attributes without proper escaping, allowing the injection of malicious scripts. Once the shortcode is saved, the injected script will execute when the page is viewed.
Remediation
No known patch is available for this vulnerability. Users are advised to review the vulnerability details and consider uninstalling the affected plugin.
