WP Games Embed Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability

Vulnerability

A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the WP Games Embed plugin for WordPress, affecting all versions up to and including 0.1beta. The issue arises from inadequate input sanitization and output escaping of user-supplied shortcode attributes, including 'width', 'height', 'src', 'title', 'description', 'game_url', 'main', and 'thumb'. These attributes are directly concatenated into the HTML output without proper escaping, allowing authenticated attackers with Contributor-level access or higher to inject arbitrary scripts into pages. The injected scripts are executed when a user accesses the compromised page.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the page.

Reproduction

To reproduce this vulnerability, an authenticated user with Contributor-level access or higher can use the [game] shortcode and include unescaped scripts in the vulnerable shortcode attributes. Once the shortcode is saved, the injected scripts will execute when the page is viewed.

Remediation

There is no known patch available for this vulnerability. Users are advised to review the vulnerability details and consider uninstalling the affected plugin.
