WordPress Image Alt Text Manager Plugin Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability

Vulnerability

A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the Image Alt Text Manager plugin for WordPress, affecting all versions through 1.8.2. The issue arises from inadequate input sanitization and output escaping when the plugin dynamically generates image alt and title attributes using a DOM parser. This vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with Author-level access or higher to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages, which are executed when a user accesses the affected page.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the page.

Reproduction

To reproduce this vulnerability, an authenticated user with Author-level access or higher can inject scripts via the post title. The Image Alt Text Manager plugin will then execute these scripts when the corresponding page is accessed.

Remediation

Users are advised to update the Image Alt Text Manager plugin to version 1.8.3 or a newer patched version.
