Pinterest Site Verification Plugin Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability
Vulnerability
A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the Pinterest Site Verification plugin using Meta Tag for WordPress, affecting versions through 1.8. The issue arises from inadequate input sanitization and output escaping, allowing authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject arbitrary scripts. These scripts are executed when a user accesses the compromised page.
Impact
Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the page.
Reproduction
To reproduce this vulnerability, an authenticated user with subscriber-level access or higher can inject scripts via the 'post_var' parameter. The lack of proper sanitization and escaping in the plugin's handling of this parameter allows the scripts to be executed when the injected page is viewed.
Remediation
No known patch is available. Users are advised to review the vulnerability details and consider uninstalling the affected plugin.
