ThemeREX Progress WordPress Theme Local File Inclusion Vulnerability
Vulnerability
A local file inclusion vulnerability has been identified in the ThemeREX Progress WordPress theme, specifically in versions through 1.2. This vulnerability arises from improper control of filenames in include or require statements, allowing PHP remote file inclusion. Exploiting this issue could enable a malicious actor to include local files from the target website and display their contents, potentially leading to a complete database takeover if sensitive files containing database credentials are accessed.
Impact
Exploitation of this vulnerability could allow unauthorized users to include and execute local files on the server, potentially leading to the disclosure of sensitive information or unauthorized access to system resources. Accessing files that contain database credentials could result in a complete takeover of the database, depending on the configuration.
Remediation
Users are advised to update to a version of the ThemeREX Progress WordPress theme that is later than 1.2. Patchstack has issued a mitigation rule to block attacks targeting this vulnerability until an official patch can be safely applied.
