A heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability has been identified in Microsoft Office Excel. This vulnerability allows an unauthorized attacker to locally elevate privileges. It affects several different versions and editions of Excel, including Excel 2016 (both 32-bit and 64-bit), Microsoft Office LTSC 2021 (32-bit and 64-bit), Microsoft Office LTSC 2024 (32-bit and 64-bit), Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise (32-bit and 64-bit), Office Online Server, and Excel 2019 (32-bit and 64-bit).

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability could lead to unauthorized elevation of privileges, allowing an attacker to gain administrator rights.

Remediation

Users can download the security update for this vulnerability through the Microsoft Update Catalog. For Office Online Server, the security update is also available via the Microsoft Update Catalog.
