Peter's Date Countdown WordPress Plugin Reflected Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability

Vulnerability

A reflected cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the Peter's Date Countdown plugin for WordPress, affecting all versions through 2.0.0. The issue arises from inadequate input sanitization and output escaping, allowing unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts. These scripts could be executed if a user is tricked into clicking a link that contains the malicious payload.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for reflected cross-site scripting, where an attacker can inject malicious scripts that are executed in the context of the user's browser.

Reproduction

To reproduce this vulnerability, send a request that includes the '$_SERVER["PHP_SELF"]' parameter with injected script content. The lack of proper sanitization and escaping will allow the script to be executed when the link is clicked.

Remediation

Users are advised to update the Peter's Date Countdown plugin to version 2.0.1 or a newer patched version.
