WP Lightbox 2 Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability

Vulnerability

A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the WP Lightbox 2 WordPress plugin, affecting versions prior to 3.0.7. The issue arises because the plugin fails to properly sanitize and escape certain settings. This flaw enables high-privilege users, such as administrators, to execute stored cross-site scripting attacks, even in environments where the unfiltered_html capability is restricted, such as multisite setups.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the content.

Reproduction

To reproduce this vulnerability, navigate to the Lightbox General Settings and enter a payload, such as an image tag with an 'onerror' event, into the 'Additional text below image info' field. Then, create a post or page, add a shortcode block, and insert a link that triggers the lightbox with the injected payload. Save and preview the post, and click the link to execute the script.

Remediation

Users are advised to update the WP Lightbox 2 WordPress plugin to version 3.0.7 or later.
