Webling WordPress Plugin Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability

Vulnerability

A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the Webling plugin for WordPress, affecting all versions through 3.9.0. The issue arises from inadequate input sanitization, insufficient output escaping, and the absence of proper capability checks in the 'webling_admin_save_form' and 'webling_admin_save_memberlist' functions. This vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with Subscriber-level access and above to inject arbitrary web scripts into Webling forms and member lists. The injected scripts are executed when an administrator views the corresponding form or member list in the WordPress admin area.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the affected form or member list.

Reproduction

To reproduce this vulnerability, an authenticated user with Subscriber-level access or higher can inject scripts into Webling forms or member lists by exploiting the 'webling_admin_save_form' or 'webling_admin_save_memberlist' functions. This can be done by uploading a form or member list with a title or content that includes the script, which will then be executed when an administrator views the form or list.

Remediation

Users are advised to update the Webling WordPress plugin to version 3.9.1 or later, where this vulnerability has been patched.
