A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the GeoDirectory WordPress plugin, affecting versions prior to 2.8.120. The issue arises because the plugin fails to properly validate and escape certain shortcode attributes before rendering them on pages or posts. This flaw enables users with contributor roles and above to inject malicious scripts that are executed when the content is viewed.
Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the content.
To reproduce this vulnerability, log in as a contributor user and create a new post. Insert a shortcode with an unescaped attribute that includes a JavaScript event, such as 'onmouseover'. After submitting the post, log in as an admin user and preview the post. The injected script will execute when hovering over the widget area.
Users are advised to update the GeoDirectory WordPress plugin to version 2.8.120 or later.
