WP Import Export Lite Arbitrary File Upload Vulnerability Allowing Remote Code Execution

Vulnerability

A vulnerability exists in the WP Import Export Lite plugin for WordPress, specifically in versions through 3.9.29. The issue arises from inadequate file type validation in the 'wpie_parse_upload_data' function, allowing authenticated users with Subscriber-level access and above to upload arbitrary files to the server. This could potentially lead to remote code execution. Although the vulnerability was partially addressed in version 3.9.29, it remains a concern for users of earlier versions.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability could result in arbitrary file uploads, with the potential for remote code execution on the affected server.

Reproduction

To reproduce this vulnerability, an authenticated user with Subscriber-level access or higher can upload files through the WP Import Export Lite plugin. The 'wpie_parse_upload_data' function will accept the files without proper validation, allowing potentially dangerous file types to be uploaded.

Remediation

Users are advised to update the WP Import Export Lite plugin to version 3.9.30 or a newer patched version.
