Relevanssi WordPress Plugin Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability

A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the Relevanssi – A Better Search plugin for WordPress. This issue affects all versions through 4.24.3 (Free) and 2.27.4 (Premium). The vulnerability arises from inadequate input sanitization and output escaping in the highlights feature, allowing unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary scripts. These scripts are executed when users access the affected pages via search results.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the search results.

Reproduction

To reproduce this vulnerability, upload a script to a site using an affected version of the Relevanssi plugin. Then, search for a term that will trigger the highlight feature. The injected script will execute when the search results are viewed.

Remediation

Users can update to Relevanssi version 4.24.4 (Free) or 2.27.5 (Premium) to address this vulnerability.
