Contest Gallery WordPress Plugin Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability

Vulnerability

A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the Contest Gallery plugin for WordPress, affecting all versions through 26.0.6. The issue arises from inadequate input sanitization and output escaping, allowing authenticated attackers with Contributor-level access or higher to inject arbitrary scripts. These scripts are executed when users access the affected pages.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the page.

Reproduction

To reproduce this vulnerability, an authenticated user with Contributor-level access or higher can inject scripts via the 'id' parameter. This can be done by accessing the 'cg_entry_on_off' shortcode, which does not properly sanitize the 'id' parameter before use. Once the script is injected, it will execute whenever the page is accessed by a user.

Remediation

Users are advised to update the Contest Gallery WordPress plugin to version 26.0.7 or later.
