Drupal SpamSpan Filter Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability
Vulnerability
A cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability has been identified in the Drupal SpamSpan filter module, affecting versions prior to 3.2.1. The issue arises because the module fails to properly sanitize HTML data attributes when transforming email address links into separate span elements, which are then reverted by JavaScript. This flaw allows for the injection of malicious scripts, although exploitation requires the ability to insert span elements with data attributes into the page.
Impact
Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for cross-site scripting, where an attacker can inject malicious scripts that are executed in the context of the user's browser.
Remediation
Users of the SpamSpan filter module for Drupal 10.x should upgrade to version 3.2.1.
