WordPress Multiple Plugins ThickBox Library Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability
Vulnerability
A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in multiple WordPress plugins, including Auto Thickbox, NextGEN Gallery, and YouTube Video Player by WpDevArt. This issue arises from inadequate input sanitization and output escaping of user-supplied attributes, allowing authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher to inject arbitrary scripts. The injected scripts are executed when a user accesses the affected page. The vulnerability is linked to the plugins' use of the ThickBox JavaScript library, version 3.1.
Impact
Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the page.
Reproduction
To reproduce this vulnerability, an authenticated user with contributor-level access or higher can inject scripts into pages by exploiting the insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the affected plugins. Once the scripts are injected, they will execute when the page is accessed by any user.
Remediation
Users of Auto Thickbox and YouTube Video Player by WpDevArt should uninstall the affected plugins, as no patches are available. NextGEN Gallery users should update to version 3.59.12 or a newer patched version.
