Linux Kernel ENETC Virtual Functions One-Step Timestamp Handling Vulnerability

Vulnerability

A vulnerability exists in the Linux kernel's ENETC virtual functions (VFs) related to one-step timestamp handling. ENETC VFs cannot support HWTSTAMP_TX_ONESTEP_SYNC because only the ENETC physical function (PF) can access the necessary PMa_SINGLE_STEP registers. Attempting to use VFs for one-step timestamp testing can lead to a kernel crash, as indicated by the crash log detailing a paging request error and a call trace related to the ENETC transmission process.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability causes a kernel crash due to an unhandled paging request error, disrupting system operations.
