DebateMaster WordPress Plugin Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability

Vulnerability

A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the DebateMaster plugin for WordPress, affecting all versions up to and including 1.0.0. The issue arises from inadequate input sanitization and output escaping in the color options within the plugin settings. This vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with Administrator-level access to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages. The injected scripts execute when a user accesses a page containing the debate shortcode. This vulnerability is present in multi-site installations where unfiltered_html has been disabled.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the page.

Reproduction

To reproduce this vulnerability, an authenticated user with Administrator-level access can navigate to the DebateMaster plugin settings. Here, they can inject a script into the color options, which will be executed when the debate shortcode is used on a page.

Remediation
