YaMaps for WordPress Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability

Vulnerability

A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the YaMaps for WordPress plugin, affecting versions prior to 0.6.40. The issue arises because the plugin fails to properly validate and escape certain shortcode attributes before rendering them on pages or posts. This flaw enables users with contributor roles and above to inject malicious scripts that are executed when the content is viewed.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the content.

Reproduction

To reproduce this vulnerability, a user with a contributor role or higher can embed a shortcode that includes unescaped JavaScript, such as a 'yamap' shortcode with a JavaScript alert function. Once the shortcode is saved and the page is viewed, the injected script will execute, demonstrating the cross-site scripting vulnerability.

Remediation

Users are advised to update the YaMaps for WordPress plugin to version 0.6.40 or later.
