HT Mega – Absolute Addons For Elementor Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability
Vulnerability
A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the HT Mega – Absolute Addons For Elementor plugin for WordPress, affecting all versions through 3.0.0. The issue arises from inadequate input validation of user-supplied HTML tag names, which allows the injection of harmful tags such as 'script', 'iframe', and 'object'. Although the plugin attempts to sanitize inputs using tag_escape(), this measure can be circumvented with JavaScript encoding techniques. As a result, authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher can inject arbitrary scripts into pages, where they will execute when a user views the affected page.
Impact
Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the page.
Reproduction
To reproduce this vulnerability, an authenticated user with contributor-level access or higher can inject scripts through the Gutenberg blocks by entering a title or description that includes a JavaScript payload, such as unquoted strings or backticks, into the HTML tag name field. The injected script will then be executed when the page is viewed.
Remediation
Users are advised to update the plugin to version 3.0.1 or a newer patched version.
