YaySMTP WordPress Plugin Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability

Vulnerability

A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the YaySMTP plugin for WordPress, specifically in the SMTP for Amazon SES integration. This issue affects versions through 1.7.1 and arises from inadequate input sanitization and output escaping. As a result, unauthenticated attackers can inject arbitrary scripts into pages, which are executed when users access the compromised page.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the page.

Reproduction

The vulnerability can be reproduced by uploading a script into the email logs via the 'wp_ajax_yay_smtp_amazonses_send_mail' action. This can be done by sending a test email through the YaySMTP plugin while injecting a script into the email subject or body. Once the email is sent, the injected script will be executed when the email log is viewed.

Remediation

Users are advised to update the YaySMTP WordPress plugin to version 1.9 or later.
