BOINC Server Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability

Vulnerability

A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in BOINC Server versions through 1.4.7. This issue arises from improper input sanitization during web page generation, allowing malicious scripts to be injected and executed.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user.

Reproduction

The vulnerability can be reproduced by injecting a script payload into various parameters of specific PHP modules. For example, in the 'host_venue_action.php' module, the 'venue' parameter can be used to inject a SVG payload that triggers an alert with the document's cookies. Similar injections can be made in the 'job_file.php' module's 'request' parameter, the 'prefs_edit.php' module's 'cols' parameter, the 'openid_login.php' module, and the 'get_output.php' module's 'result_name' and 'wu_name' parameters, depending on the subcommand used.

Remediation

Users are advised to update to the latest version of BOINC Server.
