WordPress Multiple Plugins Featherlight.js Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability

Vulnerability

A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in multiple WordPress plugins, including 'Responsive Lightbox & Gallery' and 'WP Featherlight'. This issue arises from the plugins' bundled Featherlight.js library, versions 1.7.13 to 1.7.14, which lacks proper input sanitization and output escaping for user-supplied attributes. As a result, authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher can inject arbitrary scripts into pages, which will execute when users access the affected pages.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the page.

Reproduction

To reproduce this vulnerability, an authenticated user with contributor-level access or higher can inject scripts through user-supplied attributes that are not properly sanitized or escaped. This can be done by uploading images or using other media that includes the malicious script, which will then be executed when the content is viewed.

Remediation

Users of the 'Responsive Lightbox & Gallery' plugin should update to version 2.4.8. For 'WP Featherlight', no patch is currently available, and users are advised to uninstall the plugin if possible.
