Categorized Gallery Plugin SQL Injection Vulnerability for WordPress
Vulnerability
A SQL injection vulnerability has been identified in the Categorized Gallery Plugin for WordPress, affecting all versions up to and including 2.0. The issue arises from inadequate escaping of user-supplied parameters in the 'field' attribute of the 'image_gallery' shortcode, coupled with a lack of proper preparation in the SQL query. This vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with Contributor-level access and above to inject additional SQL queries into existing ones, potentially leading to the extraction of sensitive information from the database.
Impact
Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for SQL injection, where an attacker can manipulate SQL queries to access or modify database information. In this case, it could be used to extract sensitive data from the database.
Reproduction
To reproduce this vulnerability, an authenticated user with Contributor-level access or higher can use the 'image_gallery' shortcode, including a crafted 'field' attribute that exploits the SQL injection flaw. The absence of proper input validation and query preparation in the plugin's shortcode handling creates the opportunity for injecting malicious SQL code.
Remediation
No known patch is available for this vulnerability. Users are advised to review the vulnerability details and consider uninstalling the affected plugin.
