Better Messages WordPress Plugin Stored Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability

A stored cross-site scripting vulnerability has been identified in the Better Messages – Live Chat for WordPress, BuddyPress, PeepSo, Ultimate Member, and BuddyBoss plugin. This vulnerability exists in all versions through 2.6.9 and is caused by inadequate input sanitization and output escaping of user-supplied attributes in the 'better_messages_live_chat_button' shortcode. As a result, authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher can inject arbitrary web scripts into pages, which are executed when users access the injected pages.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for stored cross-site scripting, where injected scripts are executed in the context of the user viewing the page.

Reproduction

To reproduce this vulnerability, an authenticated user with contributor-level access or higher can use the 'better_messages_live_chat_button' shortcode. The injected script will be executed when the page is accessed by a user.

Remediation

Users are advised to update the Better Messages plugin to version 2.7.0 or later.
