Tainacan WordPress Plugin SQL Injection Vulnerability

Vulnerability

A SQL injection vulnerability has been identified in the Tainacan plugin for WordPress, affecting all versions through 0.21.12. The issue arises from inadequate escaping of user-supplied data in the 'collection_id' parameter, coupled with a lack of proper preparation in the SQL query. This vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with Subscriber-level access or higher to inject additional SQL commands into existing queries, potentially leading to the extraction of sensitive information from the database.

Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows for SQL injection, where an attacker can manipulate SQL queries to access or modify database information. In this case, it could be used to extract sensitive data from the database.

Reproduction

To reproduce this vulnerability, an authenticated user with Subscriber-level access or higher can send a request to the WordPress REST API endpoint for Tainacan reports, including a crafted 'collection_id' parameter that exploits the SQL injection flaw. The injected SQL could then be used to extract data from the database, taking advantage of the insufficient input sanitization and query preparation.

Remediation

Users are advised to update the Tainacan WordPress plugin to version 0.21.13 or later, where this vulnerability has been patched.
