Android Messaging App Privilege Escalation Vulnerability

Vulnerability

A race condition vulnerability has been identified in the ShareIntentActivity of the Android messaging application. This issue allows an app to potentially read files from the messages app, leading to unauthorized access to information. The vulnerability exists in several different Android versions, including 6.0, 6.0.1, 7.0, 7.1.1, 7.1.2, 8.0, and 8.1. Exploitation of this vulnerability does not require any additional execution privileges or user interaction.

Exploitation of this vulnerability could result in unauthorized access to files within the messaging application, allowing for potential misuse of private information.

Remediation

Users can update their devices to the August 2018 security patch level to address this vulnerability.
